Vegetarianism can reduce risk of heart disease by up to a third

Jan. 30, 2013 ? The risk of hospitalisation or death from heart disease is 32% lower in vegetarians than people who eat meat and fish, according to a new study from the University of Oxford.

Heart disease is the single largest cause of death in developed countries, and is responsible for 65,000 deaths each year in the UK alone. The new findings, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, suggest that a vegetarian diet could significantly reduce people's risk of heart disease.

'Most of the difference in risk is probably caused by effects on cholesterol and blood pressure, and shows the important role of diet in the prevention of heart disease,' explains Dr Francesca Crowe, lead author of the study at the Cancer Epidemiology Unit, University of Oxford.

This is the largest study ever conducted in the UK comparing rates of heart disease between vegetarians and non-vegetarians.

The analysis looked at almost 45,000 volunteers from England and Scotland enrolled in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC)-Oxford study, of whom 34% were vegetarian. Such a significant representation of vegetarians is rare in studies of this type, and allowed researchers to make more precise estimates of the relative risks between the two groups.

The EPIC-Oxford cohort study was funded by Cancer Research UK and the Medical Research Council and carried out by the Cancer Epidemiology Unit at the University of Oxford.

Professor Tim Key, co-author of the study and deputy director of the Cancer Epidemiology Unit, University of Oxford, said: 'The results clearly show that the risk of heart disease in vegetarians is about a third lower than in comparable non-vegetarians.'

The Oxford researchers arrived at the figure of 32% risk reduction after accounting for factors such as age, smoking, alcohol intake, physical activity, educational level and socioeconomic background.

Participants were recruited to the study throughout the 1990s, and completed questionnaires regarding their health and lifestyle when they joined. These included detailed questions on diet and exercise as well as other factors affecting health such as smoking and alcohol consumption. Almost 20,000 participants also had their blood pressures recorded, and gave blood samples for cholesterol testing.

The volunteers were tracked until 2009, during which time researchers identified 1235 cases of heart disease. This comprised 169 deaths and 1066 hospital diagnoses, identified through linkage with hospital records and death certificates. Heart disease cases were validated using data from the Myocardial Ischaemia National Audit Project (MINAP).

The researchers found that vegetarians had lower blood pressures and cholesterol levels than non-vegetarians, which is thought to be the main reason behind their reduced risk of heart disease.

Vegetarians typically had lower body mass indices (BMI) and fewer cases of diabetes as a result of their diets, although these were not found to significantly affect the results. If the results are adjusted to exclude the effects of BMI, vegetarians remain 28% less likely to develop heart disease.

The findings reinforce the idea that diet is central to prevention of heart disease, and build on previous work looking at the influence of vegetarian diets, the researchers say.

Hot Dog Marketing Online - ShoeMoney Internet Marketing Blog

A lot of people call me ?The Hotdogman.? I got my nickname from working in the food business, just like Shoemoney. Last week, all the buzz at Affiliate Summit West was about Shoemoney?s book, Nothing?s Changed But My Change, The Shoemoney Story. I picked one up at the Summit and read it on my flight home, it was a pretty good read and a great American Dream kind of tale. I met up with Jeremy on the exhibit hall floor and we had a chat. As it invariably does, the conversation swung around to hot dogs. Since I am The Hotdogman, I guess that?s a good thing; I have branded myself well in the internet marketing world.

As we were talking, Jeremy remarked that being a hot dog vendor and an internet marketer have a lot of similarities. We tossed that idea around for a minute or two, and the more I thought about it, the more I thought he was right. I was a hot dog truck owner and operator for 6 years and I started fiddling around with blogs, the internet, and affiliate marketing back in 2007 when a particularly harsh winter kept the truck closed for a few months.

That?s when I started The Hot Dog Truck, a blog about ?the life and times of a Hotdogman.? I started monetizing my site with Adsense (thanks in part to a certain blogger?s famous photo), did a lot of paid posting, and began experimenting with affiliate marketing. My wife thought I was wasting my time, but she changed her tune when I used my first few months blog earnings to take the family to Las Vegas to visit her folks! She?s been on board with my ?online thing? since. Six years later, the hot dog truck is gone, but the website remains. I also have a stable of 20 or so niche sites and I do freelance writing.

Hot Dogs and Marketing

My transition from hot dog man to The Hotdogman online was fairly easy, I have always been a decent writer and I was in sales since I was ten years old. Marketing online was understandable and doable for me. I decided to give the internet marketing thing a serious whirl when a series of bad luck left me essentially disabled for nearly a year; I got Lyme Disease, bad blood clots, and I broke my knee! The immobility this caused lent itself to spending my days at the computer. I sold my hot dog truck and dove right in to creating websites and marketing various products online.

My first ventures were geared toward what I know, most notably hot dogs. I sold hot dog related courses and products across a series of websites with success. When I was doing this, I?d think back to what made me successful in the hot dog business and applied what I could. The most notable similarity between online marketing and selling hot dogs is the autonomy for the entrepreneur. Both businesses can be one man (or one woman) ventures. As many people who read this know, there is nothing quite like working for yourself. You don?t have to answer to a boss, you do things your own way, and you reap all the financial rewards from your ventures.

Going into the hot dog business is a low investment proposition. Even a shiny new hot dog cart can be bought for less than three grand; if you buy used, that number goes lower. Compared to opening a brick and mortar restaurant, starting up a hot dog cart is short money. The same is true for starting out in internet marketing. I got started with eight bucks and a free host. As time went on, I invested in premium WordPress themes, an email program, more domains, private servers, and other tools, but other than that first eight bucks, I never paid for any of that stuff ?out-of-pocket.? Investments into my growing online ?empire? always came from profits. I don?t know any other legitimate business you can start for eight bucks!

The Hot Dog Cart Principle in Online Marketing

Starting in the hot dog business is a bit more complicated than buying a cart, setting up shop, and hanging out a sign. There are some regulations involved and you need the appropriate permits. You also need to sell. If nobody knows you?re there, you won?t sell any hot dogs; you need to market your business. That involves getting out to the businesses nearby and giving them an incentive to stop by and try your chow. Theoretically, once someone takes a bite of your delicious hot dogs, they?ll tell their friends and co-workers and you?ll be off and running.

The same goes for online marketing. Like any business, there are rules and regulations to follow, so you need to know them before you get started. You could have the best offer or product in the world, but nobody will buy it unless they know about it. Just setting up a website and hoping won?t get you any sales. You need to use proven methods for generating traffic, the online equivalent of letting people know about your offer. Just like offering a free hot dog to get people to try you out, you can offer incentives to take a look at your offer. Think about it, how many free e-books have you downloaded? (I like mine with mustard and relish).

Whether you?re selling hot dogs or an online product, you still need to provide value to your customer. A good hot dog man will have premium hot dogs, fresh rolls and condiments, and he?ll serve them up HOT for a fair price. A good online marketer will have a quality offer or product that gives the customer what they?re looking for, whether it?s a product to solve a problem, an entertaining book, or a deal on the latest gadget, there has to be value for the customer at the right price or else you?re spinning your wheels.

Both businesses are scalable, too. I know many successful hot dog vendors who have moved on to managing multiple carts and trucks and even opened full-on restaurants. The concept is fairly simple and easily duplicated, you just need to find the right people. Online marketing is the same. Once you have a system and a set of processes in place, you can expand and duplicate your business. Hiring the right people is key here too. Make sure you hire and work with people who have complimentary skill sets. I started with one website, now I have more than 20 and I have people I call on for certain tasks that I just am not good at.

Notice in that previous paragraph ?the right people? came up a number of times. Whether you?re selling hot dogs or pitching the latest hot info product, having good people to work for/with you is key. A crappy employee can bring down any small business pretty quick if left unchecked. Whether that employee is serving food that?s under cooked or servicing online customers with an inconsistent attitude, the bad apple can be a killer. Conversely, good people can boost your business. An enthusiastic, friendly vendor brings people back to your cart. A savvy employee who ?gets out there? and helps boost business, whether it?s with good follow through or promotion through their social media networks, can be a great asset to any business.

Not ready to leave the security of a paycheck to start a business? Start part-time! Hot Dog vending can be started as a part time venture. Just work weekend events or find opportunities to set up shop within your existing schedule. The same goes for an online business. You can start on your living room couch! Spend a few hours a day building your business; you?ll know when you can transition to full-time in either venture.

Fun is Good too

Online marketing and hot dog vending are fun businesses. I was always cutting it up with my customers at my hot dog truck and I made many new friends in the six years I was in the business. Hardly a week goes by that I don?t run into an old customer. I?ve even made some good business connections from my old hot dog contacts! Online marketing is fun too. While many relationships are forged online, the same principles apply. Treat people well, be nice, offer good products and service and you?ll make new friends. The one thing online marketing has going for it in the fun department over the hot dog business is industry events. Parties at online marketing conferences ROCK! Hot dog events I?ve attended have been small; while they were fun and informative, there were never open bars in fancy nightclubs with go-go girls!

It all boils down to one thing: good old American entrepreneurship. Despite the woes afflicting our nation right now, entrepreneurship is alive and well in the US of A. Many of the hot dog vendors I encounter on a regular basis are in the business due to corporate downsizing. They chose the hot dog biz for many of the same reasons I listed here. The same goes for online marketing. Many people are content to moan about the economy and wring their hands in despair. The folks who decide to do something about it, whether they start slinging hot dogs or selling stuff online REFUSE to let macro circumstances dictate their future. No matter what the economy looks like, people still need a good, cheap lunch and they?ll continue to by all sorts of products online. Entrepreneurs who decide to capitalize on opportunities will always find success if they go about it the right way.

The most important thing any entrepreneur can do is get started NOW! No business gets started by thinking about it. If you want to sell hot dogs, start scouting locations, research carts, and learn about your business. If you want to get going in the online marketing game, start learning the basics (I hear Shoemoney has a course or two about that). You can have a website up in an hour or two. I know many online entrepreneurs who built a website in one night and were doing business the very next day. Don?t fall into the ?paralysis by analysis? trap, if you want to start a business, START NOW!

Personal Finance: Budgeting or Tracking: Wha't the difference ...

Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.?~ Leo Tolstoy ~

As Financial Coaches, we meet with many people who think that they are on a budget, because they know how much they spend each month. They can tell you how much was spent on groceries or the dentist. They just check the credit card bill or the bank statement. Then there are people?who use tools like mint.com This is a free service to track your spending and look at current balances on all your financial accounts. They will send you bill reminders and suggest where you can save or cut expenses. This is a great tracking tool, bit it is not a budget. Tracking your expenses and savings after the month is over will give you valuable information about where your money went. Keeping receipts for cash expenses and itemizing bills and bank statements will give you a better idea. But is this not budgeting.

What is a budget?

A budget is a tool to?help you determine where your money will be spent, before?you spend it. A large portion of our monthly expenses are either fixed or stay roughly the same each month. There are always miscellaneous spending items that will come up such as soccer pictures, gifts or a flat tire. A budget gives you a way to plan for theses expenses without overspending. A budget is built each month before the month begins. You put your income at the top and categorize your spending until you have spent all of your income for the month either on expenses or savings.

Advantages to cash

Building a budget and assigning cash categories can make a big difference in how you spend. We use cash for groceries, restaurants, household products, miscellaneous expenses and personal spending (AKA blow money). It registers in your brain a lot more when hand the wait-staff at a restaurant $100.00 bill than it does to just put it on a credit or debit card. If makes you think first before ordering appetizers or before even?setting foot into a restaurant at all! Cash is visual. You can see how much you have left in your spending category as the month progresses. It helps keep you from going over your budget. If you run low in a category, you need to revisit your budget and adjust numbers to take money away from on category and add to another. Make sure that you write down your changes so that you can apply them if they apply again the next month.

In the world of personal finance there is room for both tracking and budgeting. In fact, everyone, no matter what your income level, should be?doing both. It can be?as simple as a yellow pad or computer based. In order to be?pointed in the right direction for long term gains, you need to put these systems in place.

We welcome your comments. Here are some things to think about:

  • What type of tracking system works for you?
  • Do you make a new budget each month using a computer spread sheet or a yellow pad?

Tim and Kathryn Gerken are Financial Coaches in Newcastle, WA. They do a monthly budget and track spending on an excel spread sheet. If you would like a copy of the form, please contact us and we will email it to you!

Exclusive: JPMorgan bet against itself in "Whale" trade

NEW YORK (Reuters) - There is a new twist in the London Whale trading scandal that cost JPMorgan Chase $6.2 billion in trading losses last year. Some of the firm's own traders bet against the very derivatives positions placed by its chief investment office, said three people familiar with the matter.

The U.S. Senate Permanent Committee on Investigations, which launched an inquiry into the trading loss last fall, is looking into the how different divisions of the bank wound up on opposite sides of the same trade, said one of the people familiar with the matter.

The committee is expected to release a report on its investigation in the next few weeks.

The people familiar with the situation did not comment on the dollar value of the opposing trades placed by JPMorgan Chase & Co's investment bank traders, which was much smaller than the total positions put on by the CIO.

The intra-bank trading was not mentioned in a 129-page report JPMorgan released on January 16, which chronicled some of the bank's risk management failures. The scandal has led to a number of management changes at JPMorgan and has sullied CEO Jamie Dimon's image as a hands-on risk manager.

Kristin Lemkau, a spokeswoman for JPMorgan, declined to comment on the investment bank's trading positions.

A spokeswoman for the Senate committee, led by Michigan Sen. Carl Levin, a Democrat, declined to comment on its investigation.

It was widely known that a group of about eight credit-focused hedge funds, such as BlueMountain Capital Management and Saba Capital Management, were on the other side of the trades that JPMorgan's London-based Whale team made on an index tied to corporate default rates. But the role JPMorgan's own investment bank may have played in the messy unwinding of the derivatives trade has not come out until now.

One of the three people familiar with the matter claimed that JPMorgan managers discussed merging the two sets of trades in an attempt to offset some of the CIO's losses. Those talks ended about a month before Bloomberg News first reported the CIO trades on April 5 last year, the source said.

JPMorgan's Lemkau said that this "never came up in our exhaustive internal investigation."

Last July, the bank fired the three London-based traders in the CIO most closely tied to the trading, including Bruno Iksil, dubbed the London Whale by hedge fund traders because of the size of the trades he placed for the CIO.

Two people familiar with Iksil and his boss, Javier Martin-Artajo, said the two CIO employees complained about the investment bank's actions in the spring of 2012, accusing its traders of deliberately trying to move the market against the CIO by leaking information on its position to hedge funds. Iksil made his complaint to a member of JPMorgan's compliance department, one of the people said.

But those same sources said they had not seen any evidence to support that claim and JPMorgan's Lemkau declined to comment on the allegation.

Martin-Artajo's lawyer did not respond to a request for comment. A lawyer for Bruno Iksil declined to comment.

It is not clear when the investment bank traders and the London Whale team became aware they were taking opposing sides on a trade that involved index linked to credit default swaps sold on corporate debt.

JPMorgan's internal report did note that, in deciding how to handle the CIO trades, JPMorgan eventually applied a valuation methodology from the investment bank and not the one the chief investment officer had been using.

Federal authorities are currently investigating whether some employees in the CIO deliberately used misleading valuations to try to conceal some of the losses.

It is not uncommon for large banks to hold opposing positions in the same market. That is sometimes done as a way of hedging a position or because different trading desks formulate opposing views about a trade.

Still, the revelation that the bank was taking two sides on the same trade also is likely to rekindle the debate about whether banks such as JPMorgan Chase are too big to manage and should be scaled back.

"The big banks have always had a habit of pitting people in the bank against each other," said Charles Geisst, a finance professor at Manhattan College and a former banker. "When it's discovered it's not taken well."

A group of JPMorgan shareholders led by the AFL-CIO labor federation is pushing for a vote at JPMorgan's annual shareholders meeting this spring on reducing it's overall size by spinning off one or more of its businesses. They cite the big trading losses in the London Whale scandal as evidence the bank is too big to manage.

Ark. gov. announces $1.1 billion steel mill plan

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) ? Gov. Mike Beebe on Tuesday unveiled Arkansas' largest ever economic development project, saying investors were poised to build a $1.1 billion steel mill along the Mississippi River if legislators approve startup funding.

Big River Steel LLC, to be located near Osceola, would employ 525 people with an average salary of $75,000 ? twice the state average. Beebe said for the project to go forward, the Legislature must authorize $125 million in incentives and the plant must meet regulatory approval.

"It is an event that's going to bring the struggling Delta community out of the doldrums," Osceola Mayor Dickie Kennemore said.

The mill will turn Mississippi County into one of the nation's largest steel producers, Beebe said. Nucor Corp. already operates a mill at Blytheville, making steel from scrap metal. Since it opened in 1988, Mississippi County has seen its unemployment rate cut in half.

"This could do exactly the same thing again and then some," Beebe said at a news conference unveiling the plant.

The plant site is about 40 miles north of Memphis, Tenn., along the Mississippi River, a railroad line and Interstate 55. A major intermodal hub is at Marion, 30 miles away, where goods can be transported by barge, train or truck.

"Arkansas geographic location in the heart of the markets we intend to serve, the state's well-developed transportation infrastructure as well as the availability of reliable electrical power and the 'can do attitude' of the government officials in Little Rock, Mississippi County and Osceola make Arkansas a great place for Big River Steel to make its investment," Big River Steel CEO John Correnti said in a statement.

The plant will make steel for auto, oil and gas and electrical energy industries.

Correnti, a former Nucor executive, has had success developing steel operations in Mississippi but some of his other projects have failed. He backed a $650 million Severstal steel mill that opened in 2007 in Lowndes County, Miss. A separate silicon plant in the county lapsed when funding couldn't be arranged.

He also announced in 2008 plans for a $175 million steel rebar project at Amory, Miss. With the promise of an 80,000-square-foot facility along the Tennessee-Tombigbee River and the creation of 200 jobs. But after a celebratory groundbreaking, the project fizzled.

In Ontario, Ohio, Correnti and others promised a $275 million silicon plant that was never built, and in Stanly County, N.C., Correnti and others promoted a $300 million silicon project and 450 new jobs. After local officials bickered over the project, the deal was taken off the table in December 2011.

Arkansas voters in 2004 gave legislators authority to borrow money for economic development after narrowly missing out on a Toyota truck plant that was eventually built in San Antonio. Arkansas was also an also-ran in 2007, when Toyota opted to build a Highlander SUV plant in Tupelo, Miss.

Arkansas Economic Development Director Grant Tennille said another state is poised to take Big River Steel if Arkansas legislators don't approve a funding plan.

Mississippi County Economic Development Director Clif Chitwood said the county put up $12 million and Osceola contributed $2 million to buy land and develop utilities for the site. The most significant infrastructure need is a 20-mile gas pipeline that will run to the site from near Dell.

The state is making available a sales tax rebate for equipment and machinery purchases, a 4 percent income tax credit for new jobs for five years, $10 million in training funds, a sales tax exemption on utilities and a separate equipment tax credit.

The utility tax break includes natural gas, of which the plant will be a significant user.

The $10 million for training includes $5 million each from Beebe's Quick Action Closing Fund and from the state Department of Workforce Services.

UK ups aid for Mali, Africa, but wary of mission creep

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain boosted its offer of aid to France and African governments on Tuesday to help them counter Islamist militants in Africa, but was careful to limit the scope of its support amid fears it could be dragged into an Afghanistan-style quagmire.

Defence Secretary Philip Hammond told parliament that up to 240 soldiers could take part in missions to train African troops, and that at least 90 more are already taking part in logistical operations to support French troops fighting in Mali.

"The UK has a clear interest in the stability of Mali and ensuring that its territory does not become an ungoverned space available to al Qaeda and its associates," Hammond said.

"We are very clear about the risks of mission creep and we have defined very carefully the support we are willing and able to provide," he added.

British troops will not have a combat role, he said.

Britain will withdraw some 9,000 troops from a long and costly mission in Afghanistan by the end of 2014, and the public - squeezed by spending cuts to fix a big budget deficit - has little appetite for another expensive military adventure.

In contrast to previous major military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, Britain now says it is better to have limited Western military interventions, and that local forces - with Western backing - should take the lead in ensuring security.

Hammond played down the prospect of long-term Western involvement in Mali, saying that France had assured him of a "short intervention" to stabilise the situation on the ground, and that African and Malian troops would then take over.

Up to 40 of the troops Britain has offered are for a European Union training mission in Mali, and up to 200 are for a regional African Union-led training mission involving anglophone West African countries such as Nigeria, Ghana and Sierra Leone.

British logistical and equipment aid to Mali has so far included the use of two C-17 transport planes and a Sentinel surveillance plane based at Dakar in neighbouring Senegal.

In response to a French request on Sunday for more help, Britain said it would also offer a ferry to transport French troops and equipment, and allow France and its allies to use U.S. bases in Britain to refuel aircraft.

Britain has also offered to set up a "Combined Joint Logistics Headquarters" in Mali, but France believes such a facility is not needed for now, Prime Minister David Cameron's spokesman said.

Tumor cells engineer acidity to drive cell invasion

Monday, January 28, 2013

Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center and colleagues at Wayne State University School of Medicine investigated the acidity in solid tumors to determine if pH levels play a role in cancer cell invasion in surrounding tissues. They found that an acidic microenvironment can drive cancer cells to spread and propose that neutralizing pH would inhibit further invasion, providing a therapeutic opportunity to slow the progression of cancers.

Their study appeared in the Jan. 3 online release of Cancer Research, a publication of the American Association for Cancer Research.

According to the study's corresponding author, Robert J. Gillies, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Cancer Imaging & Metabolism at Moffitt, acidity in solid tumors is the result of an increased fermentative metabolism combined with poor delivery of blood to tissues.

In this study, tumor invasion and pH were monitored in immunodeficient laboratory mice hosting a variety of tumors. "We monitored the test animals over time using microscopy and found that the highest regions of tumor invasion corresponded to areas with the lowest pH," Gillies explained. "Tumor invasion did not occur in regions with normal or near normal pH levels. Furthermore, when we neutralized the acidity with oral sodium bicarbonate, the invasion was halted."

Researchers proposed that the acidic pH of the tumor microenvironment represents a "niche engineering" strategy on the part of tumor cells, promoting invasion and growth of malignant tumors into surrounding tissue. Niche engineering is a concept in ecology describes how plants and animals alter their environment to in ways that promote their own growth and survival over their competitors. "We have long regarded cancers cells as an invading species," said study co-author Robert Gatenby, M.D., chair of the Diagnostic Imaging Services and Integrated Mathematical Oncology departments at Moffitt.

A key to this process of adaptation and invasion is increased glucose metabolism in the tumor. "The vast majority of malignant tumors metabolize glucose at high rates," Gillies said. "We have proposed that there is a direct, causative link between increased glucose metabolism and the ability of cancer cells to invade and metastasize."

According to the research, elevated glucose metabolism is the cause of increased acidity in the tumor microenvironment. Most tumors develop an abnormal vascular network that tends to be poorly organized and leaky, disrupting blood flow and hampering the delivery of oxygen.

"This poorly organized vascular system has a two-fold effect on tumor acidity," explained Gatenby. "First, it subjects tumor regions to poor perfusion, which restricts oxygen and increases the rate of glucose fermentation. Second, the poor perfusion hampers the ability to eliminate the resulting acids, resulting in very low pH in surrounding tissues."

As tumor cells adapt to increasing acidity, niche engineering through normal cell death and new blood vessel formation occurs in the tumor and the immune response is suppressed.

"Tumor cells perform niche engineering by creating an acidic environment that is not toxic to the malignant cells but, through its negative effects on normal cells and tissues, promotes local invasion of malignant cells," Gatenby said.

The researchers suggested that targeting this activity with buffers and other mechanisms aimed at increasing pH levels will likely provide a valuable alternative to traditional therapies focused entirely on killing tumor cells.

China May End Decade-Long Ban on Game Consoles - HotHardware

Were you aware that game consoles are banned in China? Due to fears that these devices could harm the physical and mental development of children, seven Chinese ministries decided to ban the manufacture, sale, and import of game consoles a little over a decade ago. Now authorities in Beijing are starting to rethink things.

Citing an anonymous government source, China Daily reports that China is warming to the idea of lifting the ban on game consoles, which would open up a potentially massive market for Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo to tap into.

"We are reviewing the policy and have conducted some surveys and held discussions with other ministries on the possibility of opening up the game console market," a source from the Ministry of Culture told China Daily. "However, since the ban was issued by seven ministries more than a decade ago, we will need approval from all parties to lift it."

Come console makers already have a presence in China. Sony, for example, has a branch in South China's Guangdong province where it conducts training and research and development, while Microsoft's Kinect motion controller was introduced to the mainland last year. The Kinect isn't used for playing games in China, however, but for medical treatment and educational purposes.

Ironically enough, China is the biggest manufacturing base for Microsoft's Xbox console, even though the market is inaccessible and has a major piracy problem.

GOLDMAN'S JIM O'NEILL: Facebook Is To Blame ... - Business Insider

Every once in a while, since the economic crisis started, the phrase "currency wars" pops up.

It just means central banks trying to weaken their currencies (to make their countries more competitive) and other countries complaining about said weakening. It's not really that weird or that war-like.

Lately Japan has been the big easer, and interestingly some of the loudest complaints have come from the Germans, in part because Germans love hard money, but probably more likely because Germany is a big export powerhouse that could lose out if the Euro gets too strong against the yen.

And in fact, EURJPY has been going bananas, as the Euro is on a huge tear, and the yen is on just the opposite.

Here's a chart of the euro against the yen. It's been a rocket ride.

EURJPY via Bloomberg

So yes, that chart is not helpful to German exporters, but that's only half the story.

In his weekend note, Jim O'Neill of Goldman Sachs Asset Management partially blames the currency war on the "Facebook Times" because there's ever more interest in politicians saying soundbite things about economics that can go viral, and get posted by anyone with an internet connection.

Says O'Neill:

The Return of the Phrase ?Currency Wars?. Yet Another Sign of the ?Facebook Times?.

With the sharp fall of the Yen starting to get more and more attention and comment, one aspect that is back to the forefront is the notion of so-called ?currency wars? and the accusation that this time it is Japan that is supposedly engaging in them, with publicly the German policymakers, so far, being the most vocal on the topic. Some considerable time ago, I devoted a Viewpoint to the same topic when the Brazilian finance minister accused both Washington and Beijing at various times of similar supposed currency manipulation efforts, and just like them, I am going to be dismissive of such accusations.

At times, many countries and their governments do deliberately engage in efforts to change the price of their currency. It is quite amusing to read any continental European policymaker making such accusations when ? for much of floating rate history ? their own currencies have been managed very closely in semi-formal exchange rate systems, and, of course, today a large number of them kept in a formal monetary union, which, as we all know, has required intense focus and energy to keep alive. For most of the prevailing life between the end of floating in 1971 and the start of the European Monetary Union (EMU) in 1999, the Deutschmark versus the French Franc was held in very narrow ranges, except for the occasional FFR 2 devaluation and other occasional bouts of turbulence. Was that not currency manipulation?

I don?t recall either Chancellor Merkel or the Bundesbank recently accusing the Swiss authorities of deliberately manipulating the Swiss Franc?

Of course, much of what is often said, especially by a politician, is to use populist notions to either distract or sometimes attract attention to something that suits their purpose. And of course, it is especially easy and persistently tempting in this world of instant access to the internet and blogs where anyone can offer a view about almost anything.

Basically, 'currency wars' is a silly phrase with huge viral potential.

Learn The Best Ways To Achieve Online Marketing Success ...

If you want a career in online marketing, you can find some suggestions here. In the following paragraphs are some points that you can apply towards success in affiliate endeavors.

There should always be honesty in affiliate marketing. Describe to your users the purpose of your site and reveal all affiliations. If visitors sense dishonesty about your affiliations with the retailer of the product they wish to purchase, they will just pass you up and purchase directly from the merchant.

TIP! You should always disclose to your readers that you earn money if they make a purchase from an affiliate link. Your readers can tell how affiliate links look like and hiding this fact will cause them to lose their trust in you.

Use every appropriate strategy and medium to advertise your product or services. A part of your customer base will prefer searching the web for deals. Some may prefer brochures or fliers. Other customers might respond better to coupons and discounts. If you advertise in several ways, your audience will grow.

Put out feelers with a lot of different affiliates to start out. Using several related sites for you affiliate marketing program offers your customers a wide range of links from which to choose.

TIP! When you are selecting an affiliate company to work with, pick one who supports their affiliates and provides help to sell the product. Affiliate companies are smart, at least most of them are.

If you want to be the most successful affiliate possible, you must keep up with the best marketing methods. It?s tempting to simply grab the first free affiliate marketing campaign that comes along. While free always sounds good, you need to do some research to find options that will be affective in your particular market.

Optimize your marketing success by paying for professional ads. Make sure your ads are directed at specific keywords in order to produce revenue for you. Ads are a great way to draw in new customers and increase awareness of your products.

TIP! If someone visits your sport-themed website, you can be sure that they have one thing on their mind: sports. Only a sports-related link would benefit your affiliate site.

Set goals for yourself that will allow you to improve your current internet marketing strategy. Motivation remains as long as there are unfinished tasks visible in the task bar.

Choosing the hottest products to promote as an affiliate may mean thinner profits. While quality is always a major concern, it does not necessarily translate into popularity. Popularity also means over-saturation and an abundance of competition. This may not result in profits for you.

TIP! Affiliates should use text services to enhance their potential in earning commissions. While this is a little new still, there are lots of affiliates that use this to promote their products, share affiliate offers and keep all of their customers in the know.

Online Marketing

You should always research any company you plan on affiliating with. It doesn?t matter if the affiliate site has one of the highest earnings in its industry. You must ensure that you will have the ability to easily market it with no problems.

TIP! Affiliate marketing is great for businesses that have a strategy. You needdc to have your blog or site as high in search rankings as possible.

An online marketing program will help you achieve great results when promoting your business on the Internet. Online marketing programs are more effective than other advertising approaches, like banner ads or contextual networks. When looking at affiliate programs, pay attention to things like the directory?s popularity, ease of use and the payment you will receive for referrals.

It takes time to figure out which affiliate ads appeal the most to your audience?s demographic group. Some demographics like big advertisements with sound and video; others will prefer simple text. Your target audience should always be the driving force when you decide which products you wish to sell.

TIP! Increase your Google Plus follower count to keep ahead of your competitors. Intertwine your Google Plus, Twitter, and Facebook marketing, creating a combination of social media networking success.

Create your own e-book and post it on websites where documents can be shared freely. This can show that you know what you are talking about, and it can draw targeted visitors to your website. Make sure your article links back to your website.

You should consider giving your customers the opportunity to also market your product. Offer your customers that chance to be your affiliate upon purchasing your products. You can make a single sale into thousands if you have a client that wants to become an affiliate. It?s an easy way to drive more sales.

TIP! Useful advice for those who have only recently succeeded at affiliate marketing is to avoid resting on their laurels and continue to work hard. You should always strive for bigger and better things.

It is important to select a company with high sales conversion rates in order to have a successful affiliate program. Consider using a one percent conversion ratio as a benchmark.

By watching the statistics of your affiliates, you can see which links are performing well. Test each affiliate link in different locations on the page and compare your results. Be sure to use the same text for this test, and only change the link position within your article.

TIP! Write a note by hand, scan it, then put it up on your site. Handwritten content adds a touch of something that people feel is more personal.

Consider the peripherals when you are establishing affiliate links on the pages of your website. How about a water bottle with a strap so they can bring it out, too?

Every single affiliate you choose should be in your site?s niche. This will increase traffic to your website and also assist you in truly understanding the needs and wants of your customer base.

TIP! One solid piece of advice for potential affiliate marketers is to seek out companies with successful, long-term products. A diverse company gives you many ways to earn money.

Consider entering a niche market to increase your profits through affiliate promotion. It might be harder to find an audience when you are associated with a variety of products rather than focusing on a smaller, specific group of products.

Try to stay up to date in your industry. If you are behind the times in comparison to your competitors, people are more likely to patronize your competitors.

TIP! Try making a website just for your affiliate partners to improve your sales. Other affiliates may agree to work with you if you don?t hide that you use this marketing strategy.

It is critical that you do this, particularly if your target audience is the older generation. Make your font just a little bigger so people will notice it.

You will want to consider what products you are linking to. Once you have your affiliate links arranged properly, you should be earning more profits.

TIP! Use affiliations to market your online business more effectively. Affiliate marketing is one of the most popular ways of advertising, because of the number of people who click links.

Keep your intended audience in mind as you decide which affiliates to join. You should make sure that your affiliates are promoting products and services that are compatible or complementary to what your website offers. Visitors to your site are there because they want shoes, so try to sell them shoes and shoe related products. Choose ads that best cater to your demographic and take advantage of your customer information.

Try choosing an affiliate company who has higher sales conversion ratios. You should aim for about a 1% conversion rate.

TIP! One good marketing technique is to limit the purchase window for an affiliate product. When customers see they may not be able to get their hands on a product later, they might just jump on it.

Many affiliate marketers overdo it. They put their energy in too many places, they choose too many products, and they have too many promotions going at once to stay effectively competitive at any one thing. It is good to note there is no limit when it comes to what can be achieved. You just need time, creative thinking, determination and a willingness to learn in order to be successful in web marketing.

Learn new methods and share tips with other companies by joining a community for online affiliate marketers. You can find multiple outlets online where you can discuss best SEO practices, share codes, give advice, find and give leads on new affiliate programs, and get practical advice from other people doing what you do. Join different groups and forums to further your learning about affiliate marketing.

One highly effective internet marketing tactic is to put deadline stipulations on purchases. If visitors see that there is only a small amount of time left to purchase the product, they might feel an extra push to go ahead and purchase it. People love to feel as though they are getting a deal.

If you require access to your money in a timely fashion, choose an affiliate company that offers more than one payment option. While some companies only pay by check when you reach a predetermined amount, others allow you to send money directly to your bank account or to online payment accounts like AlertPay and Paypal.

Web Marketing

As previously mentioned, you can better promote your services and products through web marketing. Following these tips leads you on the road to becoming an expert in web marketing.

Egyptians protest on 2nd anniversary of revolution

CAIRO (AP) ? Two years after Egypt's revolution began, the country's schism was on display Friday as the mainly liberal and secular opposition held giant rallies saying the goals of the pro-democracy uprising have not been met and denouncing Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.

Thousands of protesters filled Cairo's central Tahrir Square, where the January 2011 uprising was born, and the area outside the presidential palace in the city's Heliopolis district. Throughout these places, the iconic Arab Spring chants of "Erha! Erhal!" or "leave, leave" and "the people want to topple the regime" rang out.

The protesters are using the anniversary to stage a show of strength in a bid to force Morsi to amend a disputed constitution drafted by his Islamist allies. They are also demanding freedom of expression and the independence of the judiciary.

Smaller crowds also gathered in central squares in the Mediterranean cities of Alexandria and Port Said as well as the Nile Delta city of Mehalla and Suez at the southern entrance of the Suez Canal.

Clashes broke out for a second day on some sidestreets near Tahrir and police fired tear gas to disperse the young men throwing stones. There were also clashes in Alexandria.

Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood supporters opted not to mark the anniversary on the streets, arguing that they will honor the occasion with acts of public service, like treating the sick and planting trees, a tactic dismissed by the opposition as a public relations stunt ahead of parliamentary elections expected in April.

The Brotherhood's ultraconservative allies known as Salafis also said they would stay off the streets to avoid clashes.

The anniversary of the revolution comes as Egypt faces a new phase in its upheaval: Ruling Islamists trying to push through their agenda, an opposition trying to break their lock on power, and an economy in free-fall that threatens to fuel public discontent.

At the heart of the country's political divide is a disputed constitution drafted by Morsi's allies without the participation of liberals or minority Christians, what the opposition sees as a bid by Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood to take control of all state institutions and the president's meddling in the judiciary.

"I am asking everyone to go out and demonstrate to show that the revolution must be completed and that the revolution must continue," opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei said in a televised message posted on his party's website. "There must be a constitution for all Egyptians. A constitution that every one of us sees himself in it," said the Nobel peace Laureate and former head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog, IAEA.

New militia-like groups opposed to the Islamists have declared in video messages posted on social networks this week their intention to defend the opposition protesters if attacked. At least 10 people were killed and hundreds injured when Morsi's supporters descended upon protesters camped outside his palace in December, starting clashes that lasted for hours with firebombs, swords, knifes and firearms.

Soccer violence verdict sparks deadly riots in Egypt

CAIRO (AP) ? Angry relatives and residents rampaged through an Egyptian port city Saturday in rioting that killed at least 27 people after a judge sentenced nearly two dozen soccer fans to death for involvement in deadly violence after a game last year.

The unrest was the latest in a bout of violence that has left a total of 38 people dead in two days, including 11 killed in clashes between police and protesters marking Friday's second anniversary of the uprising that overthrew longtime leader Hosni Mubarak.

President Mohammed Morsi canceled a scheduled trip to Ethiopia Saturday and instead met for the first time with top generals as part of the newly formed National Defense Council.

The violence in Port Said erupted after a judge sentenced 21 people to death in connection with the Feb. 1 soccer melee that killed 74 fans of the Cairo-based Al-Ahly team. Executions in Egypt are usually carried out by hanging.

All the defendants ? who were not present in the courtroom Saturday for security reasons ? can appeal the verdict.

Judge Sobhi Abdel-Maguid did not give his reasoning when he read out the verdicts for 21 out of the 73 defendants Saturday. The verdict for the remaining 52 defendants, including nine security officials, is scheduled to be delivered March 9. Some have been charged with murder and others with assisting the attackers.

Die-hard soccer fans from both teams, known as Ultras, hold the police at least partially responsible for February's violence, which was the world's worst soccer violence in 15 years, saying officers at the game did nothing to stop the bloodshed. They also criticize Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi for doing little to reform the police force or the judiciary since he took office in July.

The opposition says Morsi, Egypt's first freely elected and civilian president, and his Muslim Brotherhood allies in government have failed to restore stability amid continued political turmoil and crime, and point to a worsening economy.

In a statement Saturday, the main opposition National Salvation Front said it holds Morsi responsible for "the excessive use of force by the security forces against protesters." They threatened to boycott upcoming parliamentary elections if Morsi does not meet their demands that include amending articles in the new constitution.

The Brotherhood said in its statement that "misleading" media outlets were to blame for "enflaming the people's hatred for the current regime and urging them to act violently."

Immediately after Saturday's verdict was read live on state TV, two policemen were shot dead outside Port Said's main prison when angry relatives tried to storm the facility to free the defendants. Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets, as well as live rounds, at the crowd outside the prison.

In other parts of the city, residents tried to storm the governor's office, police stations, the power station and the main court building. Residents occupied one police station in the east of Port Said.

The director of hospitals in Port Said, Dr. Abdel-Raham Farah, said two local soccer players were shot to death as they were apparently on their way to practice. He identified them as Mahmoud Abdel-Halim al-Dizawi, who played for the city's Al-Marikh club, and Tamer al-Fahla, who used to play for the city's main Al-Masry team. Al-Diwazi was shot three times, the doctor said.

The club they were training at is near the prison that residents tried to storm.

The military was deployed in Port Said to try to restore security, but assaults continued into the evening. The army was widely used to keep order by top generals who took over after Hosni Mubarak, but the military has kept a much lower profile since Morsi was elected.

Egyptian military forces also were sent into the canal city of Suez after eight people died in Friday's clashes between security forces and protesters opposed to the new president and the Brotherhood. Another protester was killed in Ismailiya, and security officials told the state news agency MENA that two policemen were killed in Friday's protests.

Many of the young men who led the protests and clashes hail from the Ultras. They often come from poor neighborhoods and view the police force that was the backbone of Mubarak's authoritarian rule as their nemesis.

"The police are thugs!" yelled relatives of the deceased inside the courtroom before the judge took the bench.

Near Cairo's Tahrir Square, where tens of thousands had amassed to mark the two-year anniversary a day earlier, Ultras Al-Ahly waved their team's red flag as they clashed with police who fired tear gas to disburse the crowd near Cabinet headquarters and Parliament.

Underlining the distrust that lingers between much of the public and the police, survivors and witnesses say Mubarak loyalists had a hand in instigating last year's attack, which began after Port Said's home team won the match, 3-1, and that the police at the very least were responsible for gross negligence.

Al-Masry fans stormed the pitch after the game ended, attacking Cairo's Al-Ahly fans. Authorities shut off the stadium lights, plunging it into darkness. In the exit corridor, the fleeing crowd pressed against a chained gate until it broke open. Many were crushed under the crowd of people trying to flee.

Other survivors said it was simply bloodthirsty Al-Masry fans and lack of enough security that led to the deaths of their colleagues. Both sides blame police for failing to perform usual searches for weapons at the stadium.

Anger is boiling in Port Said, where residents say they have been unfairly scapegoated.

A lawyer of one of the defendants given a death sentence said the verdict was political.

"There is nothing to say these people did anything and we don't understand what this verdict is based on," Mohammed al-Daw told The Associated Press by telephone.

"Our situation in Port Said is very grave because kids were taken from their homes for wearing green T-shirts," he said, referring to the Al-Masry team color.

Al-Daw and other defense attorneys said all those sentenced were Al-Masry fans. As is customary in Egypt, the death sentences will be sent to the nation's top religious authority, the Grand Mufti, for approval, though the court has final say on the matter.

Fans of Al-Ahly, whose stands were attacked by rival club Al-Masry in the incident in Port Said, had promised more violence in the days leading up to the verdict if the death penalty was not handed down.

Before the judge could read out the names of the 21, families erupted in relief, yelling "Allahu Akbar!" Arabic for "God is great," with their hands in the air and waving pictures of the deceased. One man fainted while others hugged one another. The judge smacked the bench several times to try to restore calm in the courtroom.

"This was necessary," said Nour al-Sabah, whose 17-year-old son Ahmed Zakaria died in last year's melee. "Now I want to see the guys when they are executed with my own eyes, just as they saw the murder of my son."

Thousands of Al-Ahly fans gathered outside the Cairo sports club for the verdict, chanting against the police and the government.

"We are not really that happy," Mohamed Ahmed, a survivor of the attack, said. "The government helped the Ultras of Port Said by blocking the gates of the stadium until people suffocated to death.

Survey reveals how pet parents spoil their pets - mySanAntonio.com

Happy family dogs.

In a recent Pet360 survey, hundreds of pet parents answered questions about the different ways they spoil their pets. From cuddling in bed together at night to sharing the occasional ice cream cone or Popsicle, pet parents ?fessed up? and revealed just how much they indulge their furry family members.

Highlights of the Pet360 survey include:

  1. We are fam-i-ly!: 99.4% of respondents said they consider their pet to be a part of the family!? Now the question is?do you spoil your human children as much as your furry ones?
  2. Castaways: Pets really are man?s best friends! Three in four people who took the survey would rather be stranded on a desert island with their pets than a human companion. To be honest, we can?t blame them!
  3. R&R: Little will stop our survey respondents from getting their well-deserved R&R, but 42.5% said they would not go on vacation if they couldn?t bring their pet with them.
  4. Happy birthday to you: Three in four respondents said they celebrate their pet?s birthday or day of adoption. But we have to ask, how many candles do you put on the cake ? their age in human years or pet years?
  5. Sneaky, sneaks: 40.3% of respondents admitted to sneaking their pet into a store or public area.
  6. Sweet dreams: More than 99% of respondents said their pet catches his or her Z?s sharing a bed with a human family member!
  7. Yummy treats: Pets may have just as much of a sweet tooth as humans! Three in four respondents have shared an ice cream cone or Popsicle with their furry family member! (I don?t ever give my pets human treats, so was surprised by this one.)
  8. Can you hear me now?: Some scientists suggest that dogs can understand what we?re saying to them, which is certainly reassuring for the 99.4% of respondents who talk or sing to their pet!
  9. Pet trusts: Our pets will still be taken care of after we?re gone.? More than 70% of respondents said that their pet is or will be provided for in their last will and testament.
  10. Lucky pups and fortunate felines: Nine in ten respondents wouldn?t bat an eye at spending $100 on a cat or dog bed for their pet. A handful of devoted pet parents would even spend $1,000 on a diamond-studded collar for their loveable furball! I can?t imagine giving my pet a diamond-studded collar, but I am sure there are some celebrities who do. I say get them a really nice collar and donate the rest of the moola to an animal shelter. That?s what your pet would really want you to do.
