Crossrail 2 could be worth ?49bn to London, says Assembly report

Shorter journey times and more reliable services would help stimulate growth and attract new businesses.? The London Assembly report said the ?12?billion scheme could also help tackle chronic over-crowding on public transport.

The capital?s rapid population growth, which is forecast to approach 10?million by 2031, is likely to put the network under increasing strain so new routes are desperately needed. Transport committee chairman Valerie Shawcross said: ?London needs a transport network that can cope with the millions of extra passengers that will travel on our Tube and trains in future.

?The cost-effective investment needed to construct Crossrail?2 will herald sustainable rewards, potentially boosting London?s economy by up to ?49?billion, not to mention much-needed relief to passengers suffering on some of the UK?s most-crowded services.

?Crossrail?2?s construction should be the catalyst to realise London?s Olympics regeneration dream.?

The Assembly, as part of its submission to Transport for London?s consultation, said it favoured a regional project such as Crossrail?2 over a metro-style scheme.

Although it would be more expensive, it would be able to carry a larger number of passengers and alleviate over-crowding on existing services.?

Passengers at suburban stations such as Surbiton ? on the route of the 10th most crowded service in the UK ? would have improved services into central London as well as those in new ?opportunity areas? including the Upper Lea Valley.

Boris Johnson has put the Crossrail?2 project ? which would run from Wimbledon in the south to Alexandra Palace in the north ? at the heart of his vision for the future of the capital.

The Mayor believes it will be critical to begin construction in 2019 to prevent London falling behind major rivals. Treasury ministers have pledged ?2 million for an initial feasibility study into the project which would connect south London with the new High Speed 2 network.

The promise of funding to start the project would allow building work to begin following completion of the east to west Crossrail?1 in 2018.

China labor watchdog accuses Apple supplier of worker abuse

employment

A labor rights group Monday accused a Chinese company that makes iPhones for Apple Inc. of abuses including withholding employees' pay and excessive working hours.

China Labor Watch said it found violations of the law and of Apple's pledges about working conditions at factories operated by Pegatron Corp., a Taiwanese company.

Conditions in Chinese factories that produce iPhones and other popular Apple products have been under scrutiny following complaints about labor and environmental violations by a different supplier, Taiwan's Foxconn, a unit of Hon Hai Precision Industry Co.

Apple said in a statement it was "committed to providing safe and fair working conditions" and would investigate the claims about Pegatron. The Taiwanese company's chief executive, in a separate statement, also promised to investigate.

China Labor Watch said its investigation covered two factories in Shanghai and one in Suzhou, a nearby city, that employ a total of 70,000 people. It found violations including discrimination against ethnic minorities and women, excessive work hours, poor living conditions, health and safety problems and pollution.

Pegatron assembles products including the iPhone 4, iPhone 4s and iPhone 5 for Apple, according to the report.

Apple said it confirmed one accusation by China Labor Watch ? that identity cards of some workers were being held by management ? and told Pegatron to stop.

Apple has published a code of conduct for its suppliers and joined the Fair Labor Association, a worker rights monitoring group. The association inspected Foxconn factories early last year and said in August that improvements it recommended were being carried out ahead of schedule.

Conditions in factories in China are a sensitive issue for foreign companies that outsource production of shoes, consumer electronics and other goods to local contractors.

In its report Monday, China Labor Watch said the majority of Pegatron production employees worked 66 to 69 hours a week, far above China's legal limit of 49 hours. It said pregnant women sometimes were required to work 11-hour days, more than the eight-hour legal limit, and employees were pressured to falsify time cards to conceal the violations.

The group accused Pegatron of "discriminatory hiring practices" including refusing to hire those older than 35 or members of China's Hui, Tibetan, or Uighur ethnic minorities.

The group said production line workers sometimes dump water laced with hazardous chemicals from cutting tools into sewers.

Apple, based in Cupertino, California, said it would send auditors to three Pegatron facilities this week to investigate the report's claims.

The company said it has conducted 15 comprehensive audits of Pegatron facilities since 2007, including surprise audits in the past 18 months. It said the audits covered more than 130,000 employees.

"Apple is committed to providing safe and fair working conditions throughout our supply chain," the company statement said. "If our audits find that workers have been underpaid or denied compensation for any time they've worked, we will require that Pegatron reimburse them in full."

The company said its own audit found Pegatron employees making Apple products worked 46 hours per week on average.

Pegatron, founded in 2008, also manufactures desktop and notebook personal computers, LCD televisions, broadband and wireless systems and other products.

"We take these allegations very seriously," said Pegatron CEO Jason Cheng in a statement. "We will investigate them fully and take immediate actions to correct any violations to Chinese labor laws and our own code of conduct."

One in Five Kids May 'Outgrow' Asthma - Health News and Views ...

By Serena Gordon
HealthDay Reporter

TUESDAY, July 30 (HealthDay News) ? As many as one in five youngsters with asthma may grow out of the respiratory condition as they age, new research indicates.

Girls and those who are allergic to furry animals, such as dogs and cats, may be out of luck, however. The study found that remission was less likely in such children.

Swedish researchers who followed more than 200 children with asthma found that at 19 years of age, 21 percent were in remission, meaning they had no wheeze or need for inhalers. Remission was more common among boys, they found.

?Sensitization to furred animals and a more severe asthma at age 7 to 8 years were both inversely associated with remission,? said study author Dr. Martin Andersson, who is part of the Obstructive Lung Disease in Northern Sweden studies.

Still, even those allergic to furry animals with severe asthma at a young age had an 18 percent shot at remission, according to the study, published online July 29 in the journal Pediatrics.

As children with asthma grow into adulthood, many stop experiencing the shortness of breath and wheezing that characterize the chronic airway disease. Doctors will rarely say a child has outgrown asthma, because there?s always the possibility it will come back if someone is exposed to significant enough asthma triggers. Instead, they refer to someone who hasn?t had symptoms in a long time as being in remission.

The remission rate in young adults hasn?t been well studied, and reported remission rates range from 16 percent to 60 percent, the researchers noted.

To get a better idea of the actual remission rate, Andersson and his colleagues reviewed data from a study begun in 1996 in three municipalities in northern Sweden to examine asthma and its associated conditions. First- and second-grade children were invited to participate in the study.

At the start of the study, 248 children were found to have asthma, 58 percent of them boys. The children?s parents completed annual questionnaires until their children were 19. At the end of the study, 205 participants remained.

Remission was defined as parental report of no use of asthma medications in the previous 12 months on at least three annual surveys, including the final questionnaire. Persistent asthma was defined as having asthma symptoms or needing asthma medication in at least eight of nine previous questionnaires. Periodic asthma was defined as neither remission nor persistent asthma.

Overall, 21 percent were in remission, 38 percent had periodic asthma and 41 percent had persistent asthma. Out of 118 boys, about 26 percent were in remission compared to roughly 14 percent of 87 girls.

People whose asthma persisted were more likely to be allergic to cats, dogs, horses and birch trees at ages 7 to 8. The area where the children were from is a very dry climate, without dust mites, so the researchers noted that they were not able to assess how the common dust mite allergy might have affected asthma remission rates.

Those in remission and those with periodic asthma had similar reports of asthma severity, nasal inflammation and the skin condition eczema. Those who had persistent asthma had more severe asthma, experienced more nasal inflammation and eczema, according to the study.

Remission wasn?t linked to damp housing, living in a rural area or a family history of asthma, according to the study.

Parents always want to know how long their children will have asthma, said Dr. Jennifer Appleyard, chief of allergy and immunology at St. John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit. ?This study can give parents some hope, but there?s no guarantee for any child,? Appleyard said. ?Really, the glass is half full. There?s a good chance you?ll outgrow it, but there?s also a good chance you won?t, especially if you have allergies, too.?

What wasn?t clear from this study, she said, was if certain treatments such as allergy shots might make a difference in whether or not someone goes into asthma remission.

What is known is that people who?ve had asthma are always potentially at risk. Even if you haven?t had symptoms in a long time, Appleyard said you should play it safe and always have an inhaler available in case you suddenly develop symptoms.

City of Chicago?s cash cushion plummets, debt triples, arrests drop, water use rises - Chicago Sun-Times

"The ?unassigned? balance is $33.4 million. Experts recommend a cash cushion of at least $200 million for a budget the size of Chicago?s, according to the Civic Federation. The city ended 2009 with an unallocated checkbook balance of just $2.7 million.
The new round of borrowing brings Chicago?s total long-term debt to nearly $29 billion. That?s $10,780 for every one of the city?s nearly 2.69 million residents. More than a decade ago, the debt load was $9.6 billion or $3,338 per resident.
Last year, now-retiring City Comptroller Amer Ahmad argued that the city?s debt load was not ?troubling? because, ?We still have a very strong bond rating. Our fiscal position is getting better every year and we are aggressively managing our liabilities and obligations.?

He can no longer say that after the triple-drop in Chicago?s bond rating."

$53 Million In Jewels Stolen In Massive Heist In France - Business ...

A staggering 40 million euro ($53 million) worth of diamonds and other jewels were stolen from an Israeli billionaire in Cannes on Sunday in what?s being described as ?one of Europe?s biggest jewelry heists recent years,? according to French police.

The Associated Press?reported?that the theft occurred at the Carlton Intercontinental Hotel which was hosting a jewelry exhibition this summer from the Leviev diamond house, owned by Israeli billionaire Lev Leviev.

According to the AP:

A police spokesman said the theft took place around noon, but he could not confirm local media reports that the robber was a single gunman who stuffed a suitcase with the gems before making a swift exit. The spokesman spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the matter on the record.

Several police officers were placed in front of the Carlton exhibition room to prevent journalists and photographers gathered at the scene from entering.

The AP described the hotel as being situated ?on the exclusive Promenade de la Croisette that stretches a mile and a half along the French Riviera, and is thronged by the rich and famous throughout the year? and is especially popular among film stars attending the annual Cannes Film Festival.

It also reports that the hotel?s location has not only a beautiful sea view, ?but an easy get away for potential jewel thieves along the long stretch of road.?

Hotel officials haven?t commented, and the AP?s attempts to reach Leviev and his company were not immediately successful.

According to?a report in the Israeli paper Haaretz,?the hotel is ironically ?one of the settings for Alfred Hitchcock?s classic 1955 thriller ?To Catch a Thief.??

This weekend?s theft comes on the heels of the daring escape from a prison in Switzerland on Thursday by a member the notorious ?Pink Panther? jewel thief gang.

Quoting police, the AP reported that the convicted jewel thief escaped ?after accomplices rammed a gate and overpowered guards with bursts from their AK-47s?:

Poparic fled with fellow inmate Adrian Albrecht from the Orbe prison in the western state of Vaud.

Police say the Pink Panthers network?s members are prime suspects in a series of daring thefts. According to Interpol, the group has targeted luxury watch and jewelry stores in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the United States, netting more than ?330 million (?285m) since 1999.

Poparic is the third member of the Pink Panthers to escape from a Swiss prison in as many months, according to Vaud police.

So far French police won?t say how many gems were stolen from the exhibition that was supposed to continue through August.

The taller the woman, the higher her cancer risk

The ability to reach items on high shelves and easily see through a crowd may no longer have the same appeal for some women. A study recently published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention finds a link between postmenopausal women's height and cancers.

According to the study, the taller a woman's stature is, the higher her risk of cancer at a number of different sites, including breast, colon, endometrium, kidney, ovary, rectum and thyroid. Additionally, taller women have a greater risk of developing multiple myeloma and melanoma.

All of these associations did not change after adjusting for known influencers of these cancers, such as age, weight, education, smoking habits, alcohol intake and hormone therapy. The researchers say that height even had more influence over cancer risk than a common measure of obesity, body mass index (BMI).

Researchers studied 144,701 women aged 50 to 79 who participated in the Women's Health Initiative from 1993 to 1998. After a follow-up 12 years later, in total, 20,928 cancers were identified within the group.

Results showed that for every 10-centimeter increase in height (3.94 inches), there was a 13% increase in likelihood of developing cancer.

Specifically:

  • An increase in risk of 13-17% for breast, ovary, endometrium and colon cancers, as well as for melanoma, and
  • An increase in risk of 23-29% for kidney, rectum, thyroid and blood cancers.

There were 19 cancers studied in total, none of which displayed a negative association with height.

Geoffrey Kabat - senior epidemiologist in the department of epidemiology and population health at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Yeshiva University, New York, NY - says:

"We were surprised at the number of cancer sites that were positively associated with height. In this data set, more cancers are associated with height than were associated with body mass index.

Ultimately, cancer is a result of processes having to do with growth, so it makes sense that hormones or other growth factors that influence height may also influence cancer risk."

Various studies in the past have looked at personal characteristics in relation to cancers. For example, a recent study linked height and BMI to ovarian cancer. An interesting note made by the current researchers is that both height and BMI have been increasing by about 1 cm each decade in high-income countries, potentially increasing the risk for cancer in the process.

Few previous studies have adjusted for other known influencers of cancer when researching the effect of height.

Dr. Geoffrey Kabat makes the obvious point that, unlike other risk factors such as diet and lifestyle, height is not something we can change. He adds, however:

"Although it is not a modifiable risk factor, the association of height with a number of cancer sites suggests that exposures in early life, including nutrition, play a role in influencing a person's risk of cancer."

While the researchers found an association between cancer and height, the medical evidence shows it is a complex disease that cannot be linked purely to one factor.

JJ Cale dies; wrote hits for Clapton, Skynyrd

Musician JJ Cale, an influential performer and producer who wrote "After Midnight" for Eric Clapton and "Call Me the Breeze" for Lynyrd Skynyrd, has died. He was 74.

Cale's manager Mike Kappus has told The Associated Press that the architect of the Tulsa Sound died Friday of a heart attack at Scripps Hospital in La Jolla, Calif.

The Oklahoma native cut a wide path through 1970s rock 'n' roll, influencing some of the most famous musicians at the time with songs that were laid back and mellow, yet imbued with a driving groove.

A former member of the Grand Ole Opry touring company, Cale never rose to the level of success of his admirers, but his fingerprints could be heard all over the genre in the 1970s, and his music remains influential.

Apple Beats In Q3 2013 With $35.3B In Revenue, $6.9B In Profit, $7.47 EPS, But Posts Another YOY Earnings Decline

apple1Apple has just released its fiscal Q3 2013 earnings — it reported $35.3 billion in revenue (slightly up 0.9 percent from $35 billion in the year-ago quarter) along with $6.9 billion in quarterly net profit (down 21.6 percent from $8.8 billion in the year-ago quarter), representing earnings of $7.47 per share. Similarly to Q2 earnings, Apple posted a year-over-year quarterly earnings decline (down 19.8 percent from EPS of $9.32). Apple is still a money making machine, but the company’s growth has slowed. Recently, the Cupertino-based company has tweaked its release cycle a bit. Almost the entire product line was refreshed over the last three months of 2012, pumping sales for Q1 2013 and leaving a void for the rest of the year. The company seems to follow the same pattern this year, aside from the MacBook Air. As Zach Epstein says on Twitter, Samsung is now the most profitable smartphone vendor in the world, edging Apple with its $8.9 billion in profit. Yet, Samsung recently released its flagship phone, the Galaxy S4, while the iPhone 5 was released ten months ago. Apple still beat expectations According to Bloomberg Businessweek, the consensus among analysts was for Apple to report earnings of $7.28 per share on $34.9 billion in revenue. Fortune expected nearly the same with $34.94 billion in revenue and earnings of $7.29 per share. The company?s cash on hand slightly increased from $145 billion to $146.6 billion. The company?s cash on hand slightly increased from $145 billion to $146.6 billion. It remains one of Apple’s main asset. It allows the company to spend more time experimenting and preparing new products behind the curtains without having to worry about its resources. Apple beat all of those numbers, even if it means generating less profit. “We are especially proud of our record June quarter iPhone sales of over 31 million and the strong growth in revenue from iTunes, Software and Services,” wrote CEO Tim Cook in the earnings release. ?We are really excited about the upcoming releases of iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks, and we are laser-focused and working hard on some amazing new products that we will introduce in the fall and across 2014,? he continued. Guidance from its last earnings release forecasted between $33.5 billion and $35.5 billion in revenue and gross margin between 36 percent and 37 percent. Strong iPhone sales buoy Apple's third-quarter, shares climb

SAN FRANCISCO | Tue Jul 23, 2013 5:51pm EDT

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Sales of Apple Inc's iPhone blazed past Wall Street estimates in the third quarter, with U.S. shipments up 51 percent, lifting its stock 5 percent even as profit fell.

The world's largest technology company said Tuesday that profit fell 22 percent as gross margins fell below 37 percent from more than 42 percent in the year-ago quarter.

The company sold 31.2 million iPhones last quarter - far more than the estimated 26 million, and 14.6 million iPads.

Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer said in an interview that iPhone sales rose 51 percent in the United States from a year earlier, and 66 percent in Japan.

The solid showing eased concerns that growing competition is hurting demand for Apple's top-selling product as the global smartphone market matures.

Rival Samsung Electronics Co Ltd is facing a similar challenge with its Galaxy phones. The company, which like Apple has had a track record of beating forecasts, issued a disappointing earnings forecast earlier this month.

Apple's stock, which has fallen 20 percent since January, rose 5 percent to $437.94 in after-hours trade. It closed at $418.99 on Nasdaq.

"The iPhone number should provide some comfort to investors who were worried about smartphone demand. That's one of the reasons the stock is up. Expectations were not strong for this quarter," said Shannon Cross of Cross Research.

Apple earned $6.9 billion, or $7.47 a share, on revenue of $35.3 billion. That compared with a profit of $8.8 billion, or $9.32 a share, on revenue of about $35 billion in the year-ago quarter.

Wall Street's average forecast was for revenue of $35.02 billion and earnings per share of $7.32, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

WORRY NOT?

Investors' biggest long-term concern about Apple is whether the company has lost its innovative edge after re-imagining at least three major consumer electronics markets, with iTunes and the iPod, the iPhone and then the iPad.

Since launching the iPad mini last fall, the company has yet to update its major devices.

Apple forecast revenue of $34 billion to $37 billion this quarter, slightly below Wall Street's average projection of $37.04 billion.

It estimated a margin of 36 to 37 percent. Gross margins came in at 36.9 percent in the third quarter, sharply below 42.8 percent a year ago, as Apple sold more cheaper older model iPhones along with the new iPhone 5 model.

"It's pretty remarkable that they are selling as many phones as they are, given that it's not a new product," said Michael Yoshikami, chief executive of Destination Wealth, which owns Apple shares. "That's really the key for them; they've got to come up with a new product."

(AP) ? Protective no more, baseball players are downright disgusted these days with doping.

Now they are demanding even stiffer suspensions for those caught cheating.

"It's a new generation of athletes that are standing up," Travis Tygart, chief executive of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, said Tuesday. "The culture's been flipped on its head."

When Ryan Braun accepted a season-ending 65-game suspension Monday rather than fight Major League Baseball over evidence he used performance-enhancing drugs, fellow players appeared tired of those who cast shadows on the sport.

"They're lying to the fans," Los Angeles Angels pitcher C.J. Wilson said. "They're lying to their teammates. They're lying to their GMs, their owners, and they're going to get caught."

Skip Schumaker of the Los Angeles Dodgers said Braun, the 2011 NL MVP for the Milwaukee Brewers, let him down.

"Watching him talk right now makes me sick," Schumaker said. "I have an autographed Braun jersey in my baseball room that I'll be taking down. I don't want my son identifying what I've worked so hard to get to and work so hard to have ? I don't want him comparing Braun to me."

Matt Kemp of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who finished second to Braun in the 2011 MVP vote, said the Milwaukee slugger should be stripped of the honor.

"We had conversations, and I considered him a friend," Kemp said. "I don't think anybody likes to be lied to, and I feel like a lot of people have felt betrayed."

Braun tested positive for elevated testosterone in October 2011 but successfully overturned a 50-game penalty when an arbitrator ruled the outfielder's urine sample was handled improperly. Braun loudly proclaimed his innocence then.

"I thought this whole thing has been despicable on his part," Detroit pitcher Max Scherzer said. "When he did get caught, he never came clean. He tried to question the ability of the collector when he was caught red-handed. So that's why the whole Braun situation, there is so much player outrage toward him."

New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Braun was guilty.

"You don't accept a deal unless you're guilty," he said.

"It's another black eye for our game. I know this game is very resilient, and there's been a lot of scandals over the years, but you get tired of it," Girardi added.

He may soon face his own problem ? with a star slugger.

More than a dozen players have been targeted by MLB in its probe of the closed anti-aging clinic Biogenesis of America, including three-time AL MVP Alex Rodriguez of the Yankees.

The next step will be for MLB to inform the union of additional players it intends to penalize, which could happen as early as a meeting on Thursday, a person familiar with the probe said, speaking on condition of anonymity because no statements were authorized.

New York expects A-Rod could face a much harsher penalty than the one Braun agreed to, a second person familiar with the case said, also speaking on condition of anonymity because no statements were authorized.

The Yankees anticipate Rodriguez could be accused of using PEDs over multiple seasons, of recruiting other athletes for the clinic, of attempting to obstruct MLB's investigation, and of not being truthful with MLB in the past when he discussed his relationship with Dr. Anthony Galea, who pleaded guilty two years go to a U.S. federal charge of bringing unapproved drugs from Canada into the United States.

Players have the right to have an arbitrator decide whether discipline meets the "just cause" standard in baseball's drug agreement. Braun's decision not to fight led others to conclude a grievance would have been futile.

"Obviously the evidence was overwhelming, and it must have been a mountain of it," Tygart said.

"I think it speaks volumes for the generation of athletes today who don't want to be forced to make the same mistakes of the past generation who felt compelled in order to compete to use these dangerous drugs," he said. "I think absolutely that's a huge sign that the culture has turned in a huge direction from where it was in the late '90s and early 2000s."

Despite Braun's suspension, however, Kemp has no shot at claiming the MVP trophy. The Baseball Writers' Association of America has said repeatedly that it will not revisit any of its award votes.

"The decision was already made. He won it," said Jack O'Connell, the BBWAA's secretary-treasurer.

Commissioner Bud Selig said in March he wants even tougher penalties, and union head Michael Weiner said players will consider toughened rules for 2014.

While Braun's 65-game penalty is 15 games longer than the current standard for a first offense, Scherzer thinks it's insufficient.

"The Brewers are unlikely to make the playoffs. He misses 2013, and they are set for 2014," he said. "For someone that cheated the game as badly as he did it just doesn't seem right."

Weiner presses ahead amid calls to quit NYC race

NEW YORK (AP) ? Anthony Weiner is forging ahead with his mayoral campaign and shrugging off calls for him to quit amid a new round of revelations about his salacious online exchanges with women.

The ex-congressman told reporters Wednesday that he posited his campaign on a bet that citizens are more interested in the challenges they face than in anything embarrassing he's done in his past.

Some rivals and newspapers are pressing the Democrat to bow out a day after he acknowledged he kept sexting even after it cost him his congressional career two years ago. But he's preparing to testify at a public housing hearing and participate in a candidate forum Wednesday.

The gossip website The Dirty this week posted X-rated messages and a photo it said the married politician exchanged with a woman last year.

US, India have common goals in future global context: Biden

US, India have common goals in future global context: Biden New Delhi: Visiting US Vice president Joe Biden on Tuesday said America and India have common goals in the emerging global scenario as he called on President Pranab Mukherjee here.

Mukherjee, for his part, said India-US relations "are based on shared fundamental values and a growing convergence of interests".

Biden, on his second day of visit to the country, met Mukherjee at the Rashtrapti Bhawan in the evening.

President Mukherjee, welcoming Biden, said India always gave high priority to its relations with the United States of Amercia and it appreciates the strong voice of support for India-related issues in the Senate, including the bilateral Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement.

US, India have common goals in future global context: Biden

"India accords the highest priority to its relationship with the United States. India-US relations are based on shared fundamental values and a growing convergence of interests," a Rashtrapati Bhawan statement, released after the meeting, quoting Mukherjee said.

Biden, according to the statement, said relations between the two countries were critical for the entire region.

"The issue is no longer what the US can do for India but what the two countries can do together in the world. No other two countries have so much at stake or in common in the emerging global scenario," the statement quoted Biden as saying.

India, US should jointly counter terror threat

Vice President Hamid Ansari today said India and the US should "jointly" counter the threats of terrorism and extremism with a realistic perspective of the dangers, many in India's immediate region, they pose to global peace.

"Threats to peace, many in Indias immediate region, are the greatest impediments to progress. They emanate from terrorism, extremism, intolerance, injustice and misuse of the benefits of science and technology.

"It is incumbent on our two nations to counter these threats, jointly and individually, with a realistic perspective of the dangers they pose," he said at the banquet hosted in honour Joseph Biden.

US, India have common goals in future global context: Biden

The Indian Vice President said countering threats to peace is one aspect of cooperation between the two countries and an equally important aspect is the "promotion of stability and widening the global arc of prosperity".

"Both necessitate a deeper understanding of each other?s essential interests and legitimate aspirations. Both make incumbent an on-going, no-holds barred dialogue," he said.

Ansari said "as vibrant democracies we cherish, as you do, the right to disagree without losing sight of our endeavour for the common good."

He said "remarkable progress" has been registered in bilateral cooperation between India and the US and "we now have a tradition of political engagement at the highest level".

"From an Indian perspective, we have with the US more defence cooperation, more strategic dialogues, more economic exchanges and more science and technology partnerships than with any other country," he said.

Issues downgrading iphone 4

For some dumb reason I decided to give os 6 a shot despite all the negative reviews. I was late to the party so I got ios 6.1 which is what i currently have. I thought I had saved the SHSH of 5.1.1 but I guess not. Sigh.. Atleast I have 5.0.1 which is what I plan on going to.

I've tried every method with no luck. I initially tried using redsnow, but upon the software working its magic and telling my iphone to reboot it would fail as I'd get a "couldn't find recovery mode device" message. It is odd because once i plug my iphone in, it takes like 5 seconds for it to be recognized.

I then built several custom 5.0.1 GSM firmwares(I have an ATT phone) using my shsh. I ran the TU TSS server, put the iphone in DFU mode, and I cant ever get itunes to install the custom signed firmwares. I tried it with the 'request shsh from cydia' option both on and off in TU. I tried all the different built firmwares. If I run TU i usually get a 1646 or 1645 error which i have notreally been able to find fixes for.

By the way, when I say DFU mode assume pwnd DFU. I've used both redsnow and ireb to put it in the DFU mode and neither of them gave me a different result.

The things that stick out to me is that from the DFU mode things begin just fine, but then the iphone restarts, and I guess it's supposed go into the firmware update screen with the loading bar. Just something I recall from previous experiences of jail breaking, upgrading, etc. The iphone simply goes to the home page, with nothing exciting happening. After an unsually long time it will then get picked up by the computer. If I use redsn0w I will get the error while the apple loading screen is still up, just moments before the home screen shows up. When I try the itunes approach it just keeps saying 'prepairing iphone...' until the phone is picked up by the computer, at which point I usually get some kind of error message. Honestly I've gotten many different ones. But as of late the 1646/1645 are the persistent one. The other thing is that the iphone takes an unsually long amount of time getting picked up by the computer after a reboot from the DFU mode. If I were to just plug it in during normal use, it would get picked up in maybe 1/2 or even 1/3 of the time.

Anyways imopen to any inputs and I'd appriciate it!

Indian, Chinese patrols face off in Ladakh again

NEW DELHI: Indian and Chinese patrols were engaged in a 'banner drill' in the disputed Chumar area of Ladakh on July 16 with soldiers from both sides coming face-to-face.

Army sources said the incident took place when soldiers were patrolling in an area that both India and China claim as their own. "It was nothing unusual, it happens occasionally," a senior Army officer said.

Sources said when the Chinese patrol party came into Chumar area on July 16, an Indian patrol that was in the vicinity came face-to-face with them. The Chinese side had a couple of dozen soldiers, and not around 50 as was being reported, the sources said.

Both sides showed banners claiming the territory was theirs, and withdrew after some time, sources said.

Chumar is among several pockets on the India-China border where the perception of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) differs drastically between the two sides. At least eight such major pockets exist across the 4,057-km LAC. Thanks to bilateral agreements, there is no exchange of fire or serious military crisis.

Occasionally, the patrols come face to face, and lead to incidents like the one in Depsang in April. After several days of face-to-face standoff, both sides withdrew to their original positions in Depsang.

In an earlier incident, patrolling Chinese troops had taken away a surveillance camera on June 17 placed by India in the disputed area. After the Indian side lodged a protest at the local flag meeting, the camera was returned.

A senior source in the government said there was no qualitative difference in the way both sides have been patrolling. However, he said unless both sides are able to find an amicable settlement to the border dispute, there would be occasional stand-offs and misunderstandings. "Thankfully, we are guaranteed that no firing will happen there because of the CBMs in place," he said.

Both sides are presently engaged in discussing ways to improve tranquility along the border. Beijing has submitted a detailed note of a possible new agreement, and New Delhi has already responded to it. The discussions are expected to continue.

The occasional face-offs are taking place against the backdrop of India's aggressive push to catch up with the impressive military and infrastructure capabilities China has built up along the entire border.

Last week, the Cabinet Committee on Security gave in-principle approval for raising the country's first Mountain Strike Corps, for offensive operations inside China. India has also raised two divisions along the border. There are a few dozen roads being developed by India, besides reactivation of old advance landing grounds along the forward areas.
