Hamas says militant assassinated in Damascus

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) ? A senior Hamas leader says one of the Palestinian militant group's members has been assassinated in Damascus.

Izzat Risheq, a senior leader of Hamas, wrote on his Facebook page that Kamal Ghanaja, also known as Nizar Abu Mujahed, was killed Wednesday night in the Syrian capital.

Risheq said Hamas was working to identify the assassin and that Ghanaja's blood "shall not be shed in vain." He had no details on how Ghanaja died.

Hamas did not report the assassination on its official media outlets.

Israeli media reported Ghanaja was shot to death in his home and was a former deputy of slain Hamas operative Mahmoud al-Mabhouh.

Israel is widely suspected of having assassinated Mabhouh in a Dubai hotel in 2010, though it has never confirmed or denied involvement.

Proposition 8 trial witness to stop opposing marriage for gay couples ...

David Blankenhorn, founder the Institute for American Values and a witness at the trial of the ballot which led to California?s gay marriage ban says he will no longer fight against marriage rights for gay couples.

Mr Blankenhorn wrote in an opinion piece for the New York Times that he still believed children had the right ?insofar as society makes it possible, to know and to be cared for by the two parents who brought them into this world?.

But, he said, ?there are more good things under heaven than these beliefs?.

Mr Blankenhorn cited firstly the ?equal dignity of homosexual love? and said that while gay and straight relationships were not the same, ?the time for denigrating or stigmatizing same-sex relationships is over?.

?Whatever one?s definition of marriage, legally recognizing gay and lesbian couples and their children is a victory for basic fairness.?

Secondly, he said ?mutual acceptance? and ?compromise? was a necessary part of living together in society, that ?bending the knee a bit, in the name of comity, is not always the same as weakness? and that he wanted ?conciliation?, not ?further fighting?.

Thirdly, Mr Blankenhorn said the emerging consensus among the broader general public had persuaded him in part to change his views.

The consensus, he said ?may be wrong on the merits?, but ?surely it matters?.

He wrote: ?I had hoped that the gay marriage debate would be mostly about marriage?s relationship to parenthood. [...]

?In the mind of today?s public, gay marriage is almost entirely about accepting lesbians and gay men as equal citizens. And to my deep regret, much of the opposition to gay marriage seems to stem, at least in part, from an underlying anti-gay animus. To me, a Southerner by birth whose formative moral experience was the civil rights movement, this fact is profoundly disturbing.?

He continued: ?With each passing year, we see higher and higher levels of unwed childbearing, nonmarital cohabitation and family fragmentation among heterosexuals. Perhaps some of this can be attributed to the reconceptualization of marriage as a private ordering that is so central to the idea of gay marriage. But either way, if fighting gay marriage was going to help marriage over all, I think we?d have seen some signs of it by now.?

Instead of campaigning against marriage for gay couples, Mr Blankhorn said he would ?like to help build new coalitions bringing together gays who want to strengthen marriage with straight people who want to do the same?.

?For example, once we accept gay marriage, might we also agree that marrying before having children is a vital cultural value that all of us should do more to embrace? Can we agree that, for all lovers who want their love to last, marriage is preferable to cohabitation?

?Can we discuss whether both gays and straight people should think twice before denying children born through artificial reproductive technology the right to know and be known by their biological parents??

Mr Blankenhorn had argued against gay marriage rights in the trial of Proposition 8 in 2010, characterising marriage more as a relationship in which to bring up children than a private relationship between two adults.

That court case ultimately ruled that Proposition 8, a public ballot through which voters revoked the rights of gay couples to marry in California, was unconstitutional. The court said his appearance constituted ?inadmissible opinion testimony that should be given essentially no weight?.

It said: ?Blankenhorn?s opinions are not supported by reliable evidence or methodology and Blankenhorn failed to consider evidence contrary to his view in presenting his testimony.?

Mr Blankenhorn?s Institute for American Values aims to ensure children grow up with both married parents, ?renew the ethic of thrift?, combat ?extremism in the Arab and Muslim world? and ?civilise? public conversation.

He has previously acknowledged benefits of marriage rights for gay couples. In his book the Future of Marriage, he said it would promote stable, committed relationships for gay couples, mean fewer children would grow up in institutions, reduce the incidence of hate crimes and drive progress in the American dream of equal opportunity regardless of an individual?s circumstances.

Human Rights Campaign President Chad Griffin told AP: ?While it can be difficult as a public figure to change course, I applaud him for taking a courageous and principled stand. His experience wrestling with the issue of marriage equality and coming out on the right side of history will be an inspiration to millions of fair-minded who are in the same?place.?

Soybean acreage in India to move up in 2012 13 Cotton to drop

Last Updated : 23 June 2012 at 12:05 IST Source :agencies

MUMBAI (Commodity Online): On the back of higher price realisation received by the soybean farmers in India, the acreage under the oilseed crop is estimated to move up this year, while area under cotton crop is likely to drop.

In 2011-12, the production of cotton increased to record levels of 35 million bales (1 bale =170 Kg), while the domestic requirement was just 25.3 million bales. This factor cause huge losses to farmers.

In addition to it, the global surplus production also damped the exports of the commodity.

As a result, the farmers are likely to turn to alternative crops, especially oilseeds. The production of cotton in India is estimated to dip to around 32.3 million tons in 2012-13.

Oilseeds, especially soybean, has received good price realisation and the demand for the commodity is likely to rise on increasing population in the country.

India imports more than 50% of the edible oil to meet the domestic requirement.

Also the Union government had raised the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for oilseeds to 37% (soybean by 30%). This has also attracted the farmers to turn to oilseeds.

According to Rajesh Agrawal, ex-chairman and spokesperson of the Soybean Processors Association of India (SOPA), the total acreage under soybean may touch 1.1 million hactare in 2012-13.

Major oilseeds production in the country is estimated to grow by 3% in 2012-13

Some farmers are also moving towards guar and maize too.

In NCDEX, soybean for July delivery traded up 0.08% to Rs 3742 per qtl and cotton for February delivery dropped 0.65% to Rs 997 per qtl on 23rd June at 11:15 IST.

Garmin Swim watch tracks your water workouts, we hit the pool

Garmin is adding a new product to its line-up of fitness watches, and this one is dedicated to workouts of the aquatic variety. The $150 Garmin Swim tracks your distance swam, average pace, workout time and more, and it uploads those stats to the web to help monitor your progress. Though it's meant to be a part of your exercise routine, the Garmin Swim watch looks like your average plastic digi-timepiece. The watch has six buttons with functions for viewing the time of day, scrolling through the menu options, controlling the timer, viewing the menu and entering workout mode. The setup takes some getting used to, but the illustrative icons on the watch helped us get into the rhythm quickly.

Getting started with the Swim simply entails entering the size of your pool, with options to measure in yards or meters. Once that info is uploaded, you press the swim button and are ready to get splashing. We spent a solid half-hour doing laps, and the Swim duly recognized and recorded that we varied our strokes. Stopping the timer each time we took a break created a new interval for our workout, with a rundown of the elapsed time, distance in meters, number of strokes, type of stroke, total laps, average speed and calories burned. That's a lot of data to pore over, and Garmin lets you wirelessly upload it all to the Garmin Connect site. To do this, you have to pair the watch with your computer using a USB ANT stick: once it works, it's an efficient, easy way to review your workout, but it took us a few tries before our laptop recognized the watch. Garmin says the watch's battery will last a full year, which is plenty of time to log some serious laps. For more about the Swim, check out the press info past the break.

Islamist Morsy wins Egyptian presidency with 52 percent

CAIRO (Reuters) - Islamist Mohamed Morsy of the Muslim Brotherhood was declared Egypt's first democratic president on Sunday by the state election committee, which said he had defeated former general Ahmed Shafik with 51.7 percent of last weekend's run-off vote.

He succeeds Hosni Mubarak, who was overthrown 16 months ago after a popular uprising. The military council which has ruled the biggest Arab nation since then has this month curbed the powers of the presidency, meaning the head of state will have to work closely with the army on a planned democratic constitution.

Thousands of Brotherhood supporters burst into cheers on Cairo's Tahrir Square, waving national flags, setting off fireworks and chanting "Allahu Akbar!" or God is Great, greeting a dramatic victory, tempered by the army's continuing role.

"Say! Don't fear! The military must go!" crowds chanted.

For Morsy, a U.S.-educated engineer who spent time in jail under Mubarak, a spokesman said: "This is a testament to the resolve of the Egyptian people to make their voice heard."

Shafik, a former air force commander and Mubarak's last prime minister, offered no immediate reaction. He has said he would offer to serve in a Morsy administration.

Morsy, 60, won the first round ballot in May with a little under a quarter of the vote. He has pledged to form an inclusive government to appeal to the many Egyptians, including a large Christian minority, who are anxious over religious rule.

The military council will retain control of the biggest army in the Middle East, whose closest ally is the United States. Morsy has said he will respect international treaties, notably that signed with Israel in 1979, on which much U.S. aid depends.

"President Morsy will struggle to control the levers of state," Elijah Zarwan, senior policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations, said in Cairo.

"He will likely face foot-dragging and perhaps outright attempts to undermine his initiatives from key institutions. Faced with such resistance, frustration may tempt him to fall into the trap of attempting to throw his new weight around," Zarwan told Reuters. "This would be a mistake.

"His challenge is to lead a bitterly divided, fearful, and angry population toward a peaceful democratic outcome, without becoming a reviled scapegoat for continued military rule."

LIMITED POWERS

Morsy will not enjoy the extent of modern, pharaonic powers exercised by Mubarak: those have been curtailed by a military establishment which will decide just how much he will be able to do in government. The Brotherhood had said it would press on with protests against the army's latest rulings.

Still, his victory in the country's first free presidential election breaks a tradition of domination by men from the armed forces, which have provided every Egyptian leader since the overthrow of the monarchy 60 years ago, and installs in office a group that drew on 84 years of disciplined grassroots activism to catapult Morsy into the presidency.

He has promised a moderate, modern Islamist agenda to steer Egypt into a new democratic era where autocracy will be replaced by transparent government that respects human rights and revives the fortunes of a powerful Arab state long in decline. Morsy is promising an "Egyptian renaissance with an Islamic foundation".

Yet the stocky, bespectacled party official, appears something of an accidental president: he was only flung into the race at the last moment by the disqualification on a technicality of Khairat al-Shater, the group's preferred choice.

With a stiff and formal style, Morsy, who has a doctorate from the University of Southern California, cast himself as a reluctant latecomer to the race, who cited religious fear of judgment day as one of his reasons for running. He struggled to shake off his label as the Brotherhood's "spare tire".

Questions remain over the extent to which Morsy will operate independently of other Brotherhood leaders once in office: his manifesto was drawn up by the group's policymakers. The role Shater might play has been one focus of debate in Egypt.

"I will treat everyone equally and be a servant of the Egyptian people," Morsy said at his campaign headquarters in Cairo shortly after polling ended last Sunday, a week before his victory was confirmed by the Mubarak-era judicial body overseeing the vote.

But many Egyptians, not least the Christian minority, remain suspicious of Morsy and even more so of the group he represents. Anti-Brotherhood sentiment, fuelled by both a hostile media and some of the group's policies, has soared in recent weeks.

Slowest shark hunts sleeping prey

Researchers have measured the swimming speed of the ocean's slowest shark.

Data-logging tags revealed that Greenland sharks "cruise" at 0.34m per second - less than 1mph.

The study showed that, even when the languid fish embarks on a burst of speed in order to hunt, it is far too slow to catch a swimming seal.

Since the species is known to eat seals, the scientists think it probably "sneaks up on them" as they sleep under the water.

Yuuki Watanabe from the National Institute of Polar Research in Tokyo, who took part in the study, said that, when you account for the size of its body, it is the slowest fish in the ocean.

Previous research had revealed seal remains in the stomachs of the sharks.

"It was hard to understand," he told BBC Nature, "because [it would seem] impossible for them to catch fast-swimming seals."

The researcher joined Dr Kit Kovacs and Dr Christian Lydersen from the Norwegian Polar Institute, to tag Greenland sharks in the waters off Svarlbard.

The study, published in the Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology, was the latest part of an ongoing mission by the Norwegian researchers to find out what has been killing the harbour seals off Svarlbard's coast.

It was thought that Greenland sharks simply fed on the carcasses of dead seals on the seafloor, but the team recently discovered evidence that they were taking live seals.

The tagging study found that, while seals swim at about 1m per second (2mph/3km/h), the sharks' maximum bursts of speed reached only 0.7m per second - far too slow to catch a swimming seal.

"The [tags also] told us how fast the shark moves its tail," said Dr Watanabe.

It takes seven seconds for a single full tail sweep that propels the shark forwards.

The scientists also recorded the temperature of the water that the fish were swimming in, which were an icy average of 2C (36F).

The energy cost of regulating their body temperature in the almost freezing depths could be the reason for the sharks' very limited speed.

Biggest, fastest, fiercest

  • The fastest shark is thought to be the shortfin mako. The species has been recorded in excess of 20mph and can chase down some faster bony fish, such as tuna
  • The world's largest shark is the whale shark (pictured), which can grow to over 13m long. This huge filter-feeder shark sifts zooplankton from the water
  • The smallest shark is the dwarf lanternshark. This deepwater species is found in the Caribbean Sea and reaches a maximum length of just 21cm
  • The shark with the largest teeth relative to its size is the largetooth cookiecutter. At only 42cm in length, this species has 17-19 rows of large lower teeth and feeds by cutting circular pieces of flesh from larger marine mammals, fish and other sharks. It has even caused problems for submarines

These Arctic fish live further north than any other shark species.

In this frozen habitat, the researchers explained in their paper: "Arctic seals sleep in water to avoid predation by polar bears.

"This may leave them vulnerable to the cryptic slow-swimming predators."

Vincent Gallucci, a shark expert from the University of Washington, US, explained that Greenland sharks may not need "to get 100% of its mouth onto its prey" in order to eat it.

"It can get an assist from a sucking action as part of its feeding process," he told BBC Nature.

"This does make it a bit easier for a lie in wait ambush predator to consume prey that pass near its mouth."

In the future, the scientists who embarked on this study hope to use underwater cameras, in order to record what could be the world's slowest chase scene.

Ali Hood from the Shark Trust pointed out that, historically, Greenland sharks were targeted for oil and meat.

"It's a long-lived species considered highly vulnerable to fishing pressure," she told BBC Nature. "[We] welcome further research to illuminate the behaviour of this elusive species."

Arie Luyendyk, Jr.: Engaged to Emily Maynard?

Arie Luyendyk Jr. is The Bachelorette's most talked-about guy this season.

The Scottsdale, Ariz., race car driver with the sexy, yet approachable demeanor, sense of humor and emotional openness has been a frontrunner from the start.

It's no surprise that he's rumored to be among Emily Maynard's final three, but did he accidentally reveal who wins this season - himself - on a conference call?

Asked about whether he'd be interested in being The Bachelor if it doesn't work out with Emily, he said, "Well, you know my fiancée might not approve of that."

Arie Luyendyk and Emily Maynard

He then backtracked: "No, I’m joking. I mean, I... No, you know, basically it’s hilarious because I know that’s a hot topic right now but who knows what happens."

"If I am engaged to Emily," he clarified, "then I don’t think it would be possible for me to become the next Bachelor." Well, yeah. But did he just let it out of the bag?

He may well, have but he also offered praise for his competitors, as well.

"There’s a lot of really good guys," Arie said. "It's not that anyone’s better than the next guy. It’s the relationship. I don’t have that feeling to where you know Chris, Sean, Jef couldn’t make for a good father or a good husband."

"The guys that are there now are all very good individuals."

So, basically, Chris Bukowski, Sean Lowe and Jef Holm are sitting pretty along with Arie Luyendyk, Jr. It looks like a scandal is on the horizon for Arie, however.

His shady past, specifically his relationship with Cassie Lambert, a producer on the show, comes to light on next week's episode, and Emily is not happy.

What do you think? Who should Emily pick?

Mackie stakes claim in 'Abraham Lincoln'

By Randee Dawn

Anthony Mackie is ready to rewrite a little history, playing sidekick to President Abraham Lincoln, who spends his evenings chasing down bloodsuckers in "Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter."

Mackie said his character, onetime slave Will Johnson,?is based on a real individual who was freed and employed by the president. "That's a fact!" he told TODAY on the Plaza Wednesday. The film opens June 22.

Later, Mackie returned with?co-star?Benjamin Walker, and the pair shared glasses of wine -- from Mackie's own Brooklyn bar, NoBar -- with Kathie Lee Gifford and guest Regis Philbin on the TODAY set.

"I've got the market cornered on weird interpretations of presidents," said Walker, who plays Lincoln in the film, and starred in the Tony-winning "Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson" as President Andrew Jackson.

Microsoft could alienate hardware partners with new tablets

News Analysis

By Agam Shah

June 19, 2012 03:11 PM ET

IDG News Service - Microsoft's Surface tablet is a measured gamble to enter the cutthroat tablet business, but the company could be alienating longtime hardware partners that are also expected to announce Windows 8 devices starting later this year.

The Surface tablet models come with a 10.6-inch display and will be distributed directly to customers, via Microsoft stores and the company's online store. Microsoft's goal is to offer a package of hardware and software built around Windows so the company can effectively compete with Apple, which offers the iPad and iPhone devices running on the iOS platform, analysts said.

Microsoft is offering two tablets, the Surface with Windows RT for ARM processors, and the Surface Pro with Windows 8 Pro for x86 Intel processors. The Surface tablet with Windows RT is lighter and comes with Office 15, which includes widely used productivity applications such as Word and Excel. Microsoft's new tablets will come with a kickstand and a thin cover that doubles as a keyboard and trackpad.

The creation of its own tablet is a sign that Microsoft has lost faith in PC manufacturers to develop devices that can take advantage of the Windows OS, analysts said. Apple has dominated the tablet market, and Microsoft had to take hardware development into its own hands as PC makers were not generating enough excitement to drive interest in Windows 8. Companies like Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Acer, Asus and Lenovo are expected to come out with tablets running the upcoming Windows 8 and RT operating systems.

If the Surface tablets become successful, Microsoft could potentially be stealing future revenues from its partners who view the tablet segment as profitable, said Roger Kay, principal analyst at Endpoint Technologies Associates.

"I have to believe that [the partners] are fairly discontent about it," Kay said. "The tablet is the heart and soul of Windows 8, and it looks like Microsoft has reserved it."

Microsoft has licensed Windows to hardware makers for PCs since the 1980s, but that business model may be getting antiquated, Kay said. Microsoft may be seeking a new business model around tablets, but at the same time the PC market is not going anywhere and Microsoft wants to retain its Windows licensing business, Kay said. Microsoft may be experimenting with a new tablet business model, but the software company will have to strike the right balance in maintaining a relationship with the PC makers on tablets and PCs.

Shaw Wu, a financial analyst at Sterne Agee, agreed, saying Microsoft's tablets could eat into the sales of devices from Windows partners. The full impact of Microsoft's tablets on PC makers has yet to be determined, Wu said in a research note sent on Tuesday.

Top #30 Greatest Ways To Lose Belly Fat..

#15? Pilates

Pilates may not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about shrinking your belly fat, but it does and it will help towards shrinking your dreaded belly fat. Research has shown that Pilates will significantly improve posture. Having poor posture will give you a bigger belly than you have and give you a pooch even if you hardly have any body fat. So, if this describes you, consider taking some Pilates classes at your local gym or fitness center, or you also can follow a Pilates DVD at home.

Eliminating belly fat is one of the most common reasons why people are motivated to workout. Fat in the belly not only makes you feel self-conscious but can also contribute to such health problems as heart disease and poor posture. As you lose weight, your stomach is one of the first places to shed inches. However, once you are in a regular workout routine, you may find that your midsection still looks flabby. Core-related workouts, such as Pilates, are essential to strengthen your body and to help keep belly fat at bay. Pilates is designed to target your abdominal muscles and lower back, an area of the body also known as the core. This type of workout helps strengthen your stomach, back and pelvis. Although inner-strength training is the primary goal of Pilates, this type of workout is often sought by people who are looking to get rid of belly fat.?

Right Idea, Wrong Approach - American Beverage Association

The American Medical Association (AMA) is considering a report which recommends using funds from a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages to finance efforts to reduce obesity. The AMA?s report acknowledges that sugar-sweetened beverage taxes are ?unlikely to significantly impact the prevalence of obesity and other adverse outcomes.? As we?ve said before, taxes don?t make people healthier.

Our industry fully supports comprehensive approaches to combating obesity including education, diet and exercise; however, funding these programs through discriminatory taxes on sugar-sweetened beverages is misguided. Calories from sugar-sweetened beverages-including soft drinks, juice drinks, flavored waters and other beverages-make up only 7 percent of calories, on average, in the American diet, according to a National Cancer Institute analysis of government data submitted to the U.S. Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee. Singling out sugar-sweetened beverages misses 93 percent of calories from other sources.? Furthermore, the average calories per serving from beverages decreased 23 percent due in large part to the innovation of more low- and zero-calorie beverages, yet obesity rates continued to rise.

Importantly, the beverage industry is committed to working with key stakeholders like former President Bill Clinton and First Lady Michelle Obama on solutions that will have a lasting and meaningful impact on obesity. We have already taken significant steps from the Clear on Calories initiative to School Beverage Guidelines and we continue delivering more no- and low-calorie beverage options.

Science proves and real world evidence demonstrates: taxes don?t make people healthy. Comprehensive approaches to diet and exercise do.

Arroyo wins his first game in 5 1/2 weeks

By MIKE FITZPATRICK

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:37 p.m. ET June 15, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) - Jay Bruce thought he sailed around the bases without much trouble at all. His teammates saw it differently, so they didn't pass up a chance to razz the All-Star slugger when he got back to the bench.

Bruce hit an inside-the-park homer that left Jason Bay with yet another injury and the Cincinnati Reds beat the New York Mets 7-3 on Friday night to give Bronson Arroyo his first victory in 5 1/2 weeks.

"They said I looked terrible when I got to the dugout. But I thought I looked fine. I felt fine," Bruce said as a teammate yelled out "speed demon!" in the clubhouse. "Had enough gas to be safe, so that's all that matters."

Brandon Phillips added a two-run shot to extend his recent hitting tear and the NL Central leaders followed up a three-game sweep of intrastate rival Cleveland by winning the series opener at Citi Field, a nice present for manager Dusty Baker on his 63rd birthday.

"First time I won on my birthday in I don't know how long," Baker said. "You can look it up. It ain't good."

Reds slugger Joey Votto and Mets star David Wright were both hit by pitches, but neither led to any trouble.

"That's the way you play the game," Wright said, just about accepting that he was plunked on purpose in retaliation for Votto. "I know we didn't hit Joey on purpose, but you take care of your guys. We'd have done the same thing. I appreciate them keeping the ball down, doing it the right way."

Bay was hurt when he crashed into the left-field wall while trying to catch Bruce's inside-the-park homer. The Mets said he left the game with a possible concussion, the latest setback for a player who has been an injury-plagued bust in New York since signing a $66 million, four-year contract before the 2010 season.

"He looked banged up. He looked like he just had a concussion. Especially, you look at the replay and see how his head hit the wall," Wright said.

Bay missed the final two months of his first season with the Mets because of a concussion he sustained while slamming into the left-field fence to make a catch at Dodger Stadium.

"It's a combination of the way he hustles, and bad luck. You feel for him. You know the way he's worked to overcome some of these injuries," Wright said. "Obviously, with the head injury, you know you've got to be very careful."

Arroyo, who was 0-3 in six starts since beating Milwaukee on May 7, found his form against one of his favorite opponents. The right-hander entered 7-2 with a 2.81 ERA and three complete games in his previous 12 starts against the Mets - with five other outings that lasted eight innings.

This time, Arroyo (3-4) was pulled in the seventh after giving up Kirk Nieuwenhuis' third homer in two games and a two-run drive by Scott Hairston. Using his usual array of slow breaking balls and odd angles, Arroyo yielded four hits while striking out five and walking two.

"At this point in the season, with two wins, I'll take a win any way I can get one," Arroyo said. "I was happy with the performance. I did pretty much what I wanted with the lineup."

Wilson Valdez, making his first major league start in center field, had a two-run double and three RBIs for Cincinnati. Jose Arredondo, Sean Marshall and Aroldis Chapman each worked a hitless inning out of the bullpen.

"That's how you script it," Baker said.

New York starter Dillon Gee (4-5) gave up four runs - three earned - and five hits in six innings. The Mets had just returned from Tampa Bay, where they outscored the Rays 29-9 for a three-game sweep that salvaged a 4-5 road trip against three of baseball's top teams.

Bruce led off the second inning with an opposite-field drive into the left-field corner. Bay raced back, tumbled to the warning track as the ball barely eluded him and then hit his head against the lower part of the fence.

Bay, recently activated from the disabled list, struggled to get to his feet and find the ball. He finally fired it toward the infield, but Bruce slid across the plate to easily beat the relay.

It was Cincinnati's first inside-the-park homer since Drew Stubbs hit one against Toronto on June 17, 2011. The previous inside-the-park shot against the Mets was hit by Blake DeWitt of the Dodgers in Los Angeles on May 6, 2008.

Mets manager Terry Collins and trainer Ray Ramirez came out to check on Bay, who limped slightly as he walked off the field with Ramirez. Wright patted Bay on the head.

Hairston took over in left field. Moments later, he bobbled Ryan Ludwick's double down the left-field line for an error that allowed a run to score.

Bay is batting .187 with four home runs and six RBIs. He was on the disabled list from April 24 until June 6 with a broken rib and is 2 for 25 with a home run since being activated.

"I feel terrible for him. He's had a tough go of it here," Bruce said.

NOTES: Mets INF Justin Turner (sprained right ankle) was traveling to New York from his rehab assignment with Triple-A Buffalo in anticipation of being activated Saturday, the club said. ... Cincinnati placed Stubbs on the 15-day DL with a strained muscle on his left side and called up utilityman Willie Harris from Triple-A Louisville. Harris, who spent last season with the Mets, opened the ninth with a pinch-hit double and scored on Valdez's single. ... Chris Heisey, who had been subbing for Stubbs in center, sat out after leaving Thursday's game against Cleveland with a mild groin strain.
