APAn emotional Andy Reid returned to practice Wednesday, a day after the Eagles coach attended the funeral of his son Garrett.
Reid told reporters after practice he was overwhelmed by the support he?s received in the three days since his son?s death.
?I?m a humble man standing before you, very humble man,? Reid said, via Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer. ?I?m humble because [of] the outpouring ? not only from the media, but our football team, from the fans, it was unbelievable. Unbelievable.
?I?m not sure you think that many people care, not that you go in that direction. But it?s a very humbling feeling. I know my son would feel the same way.?
Reid acknowledged in a statement Monday that his son had lost a long battle with drug addiction, though Reid offered no specifics Wednesday.
?It?s a sad situation, it?s one that my son?s been battling for a number of years, our family?s been battling,? Reid said. ?That doesn?t mean you stop loving your son. That?s not what you do. You love him, and a lot of families deal with this type of thing.?
More than 900 people attended Tuesday?s funeral, including many from around the NFL.
Reid plans to coach Thursday night when the Eagles play the Steelers, after leaving practice in the hands of his assistants Sunday and Monday.
?I know that coming back and coaching is the right thing to do,? Reid said. ?I know my son wouldn?t have wanted it any other way.?
Getting back into work will likely help Reid in the short term, diverting his focus from the tragic events of the past few days. It?s no real consolation, but that?s going to be hard to find.
